I wondered this morning if the evening workshop I missed last month on how to be an Upstander covered what to do when the white nationalist threatening a muslim woman on the subway slits your throat. Likely not. We cannot prepare for that which we cannot imagine. The workshop facilitator probably instructed people that they might be uncomfortable but that by standing in solidarity, videotaping with your phone and calling the authorities you too can protect targets of racists.
I wondered this morning if her son's valiant act that ended his life actually provided comfort to his mother. Likely not. We cannot prepare for that which we cannot imagine. I suspect she would happily trade having a dead hero son for the chance to wipe crumbs off of his bushy beard after he ate the cookies she had just baked for him.
